“It doesn’t matter how busy you are, you always need to make time for the important things.
It helps that we have a great support structure,” he says.
He also wanted to find a project that would resonate with him, a project which was different, so when the role of Bogart came along, Mabalane could not say no.
“I also have so much respect for the Bomb guys [the production company that produces .
They started in the industry long before I did and I’ve always admired their work,” he admits.
He also credits his wife, Gail Mabalane, who’s also on the show, as the one who pushed him to finally pursue acting. You know you’re partners when you share your dreams with each other and she was always asking me why I wasn’t pursuing this,” he says.
Thanks to his wife’s persistence, Mabalane’s fans will now be able to watch him in his first role, which he says he loves.
Mabalane plays the role of gang leader Bogart, from the No-Name gang in Kofifi. “When you put on that suit, you even start walking in character. I could even relate to the way he speaks because my late father is from that era and he and his friends used to speak like that.” Mabalane says.
Although he’s enjoying portraying this character, he’s even more ecstatic about his new role as a father: He is father to a beautiful baby girl, Leaona, who was born earlier this year.
Since meeting his little princess, Mabalane says fatherhood has been amazing and that while he might be busy with his projects, he still makes time for all the important people in his life.
The show, which takes viewers way back in time to explore the lives of those living in Sophia Town in the 50s, is scheduled to start next week Monday.
Mabalane spoke to us about his new role and fatherhood.
It’s been over 18 years since Mabalane first entered the entertainment industry, but it was only in 2006 that the acting seed was firmly planted in his mind.
